We've gotten some interesting questions about various aspects of Pasadena via e-mail after launching our new website- take a look below and see what's on our viewers' minds! Why Is Pasadena Known As The "Crown City"?We've heard viewers and website visitors ask us why Pasadena is called "crown city"- after all, there are many local "Crown City" businesses such as Crown City Tire, Crown City Hardware, Crown City Veterinary Group and our personal favorite, Crown City News. The official city seal for Pasadena also has a crown with a key in it- so where does the name actually come from? The name actually originates to the name of the city, Pasadena, which means "valley" in Ojibwa Indian language. Although the "valley" meaning exists as a defenition, others currently interpet "Pasadena" to mean crown (or key) of the valley in the translation. Has anything else been named after Pasadena?Yes! We've even had other cities in the U.S. named after us! In 1980, scientists named an eight-mile wide asteriod after us. Also, Pasadena, TX, a city just outside of Houston, was named after Pasadena, CA because some thought that the land there looked similar to that here. The USS Pasadena, a government submarine based out of Pearl Harbor over 360 feet long, was named after Pasadena, CA in 1985. There is also a small city known as Pasadena in Maryland, although it looks like they weren't named after us! Is the name of the neighborhood known as "Old Pasadena" or "Old Town"?We've had tweets about it before and here's our answer: We've heard both, and many local students refer to it as "Old Town". Officially, it's registered in the National Register of Historic Places as "Old Pasadena Historic District" and the Wikipedia article on it refers to it as "Old Pasadena" (but the article is named "Old Town Pasadena"). There are also groups on Facebook that call it Old Town Pasadena, but in the end it seems like a tie between both names!
