Column: Keeping Fitness through the Holidays

By Hope and Stephanie – Certified Personal Trainers, Special for the Pasadena Independent

November is here and the holiday season is now in motion. Ready or not here they come: parties, shopping, decorating, travel, food and more food.

While the holidays bring joy, they can also be a stressful and disrupting time of year. Often time’s folks who have been on a regular exercise schedule get sidetracked and those who have yet to begin one will more than likely put it off until the first of the year.

Instead of allowing the holidays to take you completely off of your fitness journey, or waiting until January to begin one, you can take action now that will prepare you for an easier transition into the New Year. Here are a few strategies to help you along the way:

  1. Try different activities and venues until something sticks. It can be a class, coach, personal trainer, mentor, or team, whatever it takes to bring you to a place of adherence. No guilt if you need to restart every week, or every day. If you fail, get up, start again, and keep moving.
  2. Keep it simple. Make sure that whatever activity you choose is easy for you to prepare for and is geographically desirable. This ensures that it will more easily fit it into your busy holiday schedule.
  3. Make it fun. Maybe you just need to feel good right now, so choose something that you want to do, such as: dance class, yoga, stretching class, Pilates, spin, a simple weekly walk, or a swim. Do whatever entices you to be active.
  4. No need to go it alone: grab your neighbor, your spouse, your best friend, or find a community that supports your interests.

Start to incorporate some fitness, no matter how small, into your schedule now. This will help you to develop a mindset and habit of exercising. It may take you many “starts” to get on track and that is okay! It is better to keep starting over rather than to give up and spend the next two months overeating and under-exercising. Imagine finishing 2014 without gaining a pound, and confidently embracing your fitness journey in the New Year.
