Pasadena High Hosts Fred Korematsu Day This Saturday

Pasadena High School will play host to a commemoration of Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution this Saturday, Jan. 31. The state of California established Fred Korematsu Day in 2010 in recognition of the national civil rights activist who was convicted of refusing to go to the U.S. government’s incarceration camps for Japanese Americans during World War II. Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard is scheduled to attend.

The free event begins at 8a.m. with the Six Weddings & A Dress Exhibition, which features children’s art activities and an exhibit of internment camp photos. At 9a.m. the Kodama Taiko Drummers will take the stage.

The highlight of the morning will be 6 speakers, each descendants of Pasadena area families imprisoned in the camps, describing their relatives’s experiences during this difficult time. MASH actress Kellye Nakahara Wallett will be on hand to discuss her grandfather’s imprisonment and death in an internment camp.

Pasadena High School is located at 2925 E. Sierra Madre Blvd., Pasadena
