The fourth annual “Heroes in the Shadows” Memorial Day celebration took place May 25 to May 29 in Pomona, Calif.
“Heroes in the Shadows” is a Vet Hunters Project event providing free services, information and support to America’s homeless veterans. The Vet Hunters Project is a San Gabriel Valley non-profit founded by Iraq combat veteran Joe Leal in order to assist and advocate for other veterans.
“Heroes in the Shadows” accepts all veterans, regardless of area of residence, gender and Veteran Status. This year’s event took place at the Pomona National Guard Armory located at 600 South Park Ave. but attracted attendees from surrounding areas including the San Gabriel Valley, the Inland Empire and San Bernardino County.
Daily on-site accommodations included sleeping quarters, showers, laundry facilities, personal grooming, entertainment and daily meals provided by Celebrity Chef’s Two Guys Grilling. There was also a designated women’s retreat area.
There were also crucial counseling and assistance services, including Navigating VA issues, Employment, Education, Claims, Housing, On-site Dental, Medical and Vision, Legal, Chaplaincy and Spiritual Support and Substance Abuse and Mental Health. The Veterans Administration and Vet Center’s mobile units and the Department of Public Social Services members were on-site to assist with immediate benefits screening.
Unlike similar veteran events in Southern California, “Heroes In the Shadows” does not use government funding, relying instead on personal and organization donations and sponsorships. For more information or to make donations, visit the Vet Hunters website at www.vethunters.org.
