Pasadena Mayor Terry Terneck announced this week that the City Council appointed Assistant City Manager Steve Mermell as the Interim City Manager. Mermell will start on Feb. 15, 2016 to replace outgoing City Manager Michael J. Beck, who has accepted a new position as the Administrative Vice Chancellor for UCLA.

Mayor Tornek says, ““The Council has full faith and confidence that Steve will continue the tradition of providing outstanding executive leadership for the organization and in service to our residents and businesses.”

Mermell first joined the City of Pasadena in 1989 as an analyst for the Water and Power Department. During his time in Pasadena, he has served in a variety of positions for several City departments before he was appointed as one of the two Assistant City Managers in 2008.

The City Council Ad Hoc Search Committee recommended Mermell as the first choice for the position. The Committee includes the Mayor and Council members Victor Gordo, Tyron Hampton and Margaret McAustin. In addition, Mermell’s appointment was unanimously approved by the City Council with a setting of an annual salary at $260,000.

Mermell resides in Los Angeles with his wife and two sons. He enjoys playing golf on his spare time.
