Man Sentenced to Nine Years in Prison for Attack on Russian Family

On November 18, 2015, a family of Russian tourists were at a shopping and entertainment center at Hollywood and Highlands when they were attacked by a homeless man, Donald Offerman

According to the report by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, Offerman approached the family from behind and repeatedly slashed at them with a knife. One of the family members sustained wounds while fending off Offerman as his family ran to safety. Two off-duty police officers intervened and detained Offerman at gunpoint until help arrived.

Offerman was originally scheduled to stand trial on November 20, 2015, but was found unable to stand trial due to incompetence. The trial proceeded as normal by April 26, 2018.

Offerman entered a no contest plea on one count each of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and an allegation of causing bodily injury in concordance with a negotiated plea agreement. He was sentenced to nine years in prison on February 14, 2019.
