City Won’t Let Up Restrictions On Liquor Store

Super Liquor, a store in Northwest Pasadena, is in danger of going out of business due to sanctions placed on it by the City Council.

Due to illegal activity, the Pasadena City Council requires Super Liquor to label all bottles of alcohol with a sticker. While seemingly insignificant, this is adding $12,000 a year in operating costs to the store. In addition to the sticker, the store is only allowed to sell alcohol between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.

The sanctions come as a result of complaints of drunken people causing problems in the surrounding neighborhood, including fights. Even with these issues coming to light, this is not the first time Super Liquor has run afoul of the law.

According to a report by the Pasadena Police Department, the store was a front for an illegal drug dealing operation. Combined with the alcohol-related problems, the store has seemingly had a negative influence on the community in which it resides.  To many in the Pasadena area, liquor stores are associated with the general decay of the surrounding residential area.

While the owners of the store do have a case against the city’s encroachment on their rights to sell alcohol, it seems that the sentiments of the locals will work against them. With the abundance of alcohol related-problems that occur around the area, the store is unlikely to receive more lenient treatment from city officials.
