Winter at Descanso Gardens Means Camellias
Descanso Garden’s signature flower begins to bloom in profusion in January and continues well into spring. The Gardens celebrates its arrival with flower shows and a new festival “The Golden Age of the Camellia” in February when you can enjoy shows, tours and workshops. Here’s a recap of upcoming Camellia-themed events:
Camellia Shows at Descanso Gardens
Bring a camellia from your garden for identification and learn more about it from friendly experts; arrive early on Saturday to enter your blooms in novice and intermediate categories, or just come by to admire the flower that is called the “Empress of Winter.” (Entrance to Camellia Shows is free with Gardens admission.)
· Pacific Camellia Show, Saturday, Jan. 16, 1 to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 17, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
· Southern California Camellia Society Show, Saturday, Jan. 30, 1 to 4 p.m. and Sunday Jan. 31, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
· Southern California Camellia Council Show, Saturday, Feb. 27, 1 to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 28, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Golden Age of the Camellia Festival – Feb. 20-27
In the 1950s and 60s, Descanso celebrated its extensive camellia collection with elaborate pageantry, society shows, a “Queen of Camellialand” contest and walks through the famed winter-blooming flower forests.
· Faery Tours of the Camellia Forest, Sat., Feb. 20, tours depart at 9:30, 10:15 and 11 a.m.
Follow the forest faeries as they guide children and families through Descanso’s Camellia Forest. Learn flower facts, hear faery stories of enchantment and frolic, and be prepared for surprises along the way. Free with Gardens admission but space is limited. Call (818) 949-7980 to reserve your spot.
· Charles Phoenix’s Retro Slide Show of Southern California: Sat., Feb. 20, 8 p.m.
Join pop culture humorist and author Charles Phoenix for a laugh-out-loud celebration of retro car culture such as suburbia, fast food stands and L.A. landmarks – including Descanso Gardens’ Camellia Festivals! Charles Phoenix super-charges the classic living room slide show by reinventing it into a hip and high octane celebration of classic and kitschy mid-century Southern California life and style. In keeping with the theme, coming to the party dressed in clothes of the era is not discouraged. Camellia cocktails will be available for purchase before and after the slide show.

· Brewing Camellias – A Tea Tasting Workshop: Sun., Feb. 21, 1 p.m.
Bet you didn’t know that almost all teas come from the beautiful Camellia sineses. Descanso’s Robin Sease gives you the low down on camellia history and tea-growing facts along with showing the differences between green, oolong and black teas. Hot tea tasting is the sipping finale. Free, but seating is limited.
· Walking Tour of the Camellia Forest: Sat., Feb. 27, 2 p.m.
Descanso’s Wayne Walker guides flower fanciers into the forests of Camellia sansanqua. You will discover blooms in a great variety of forms and in every shade of pink, white and red. Free with Gardens admission.

Established as a public garden in 1954, Descanso Gardens is at 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge, near the interchange of the 2 and 210 freeways. A popular setting for weddings, parties and meeting in addition to being a location for numerous feature films and television shows, the Gardens are open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily except Christmas Day. Parking is free. Admission fees are $8 for adults; $6 for seniors and students; $3 for children 5 to 12, and free for members and children 5 and younger.
