Pasadena Unified School District seniors have until April 21 to apply for $6,000 in Pasadena Water and Power Department scholarships, according to the District’s press release.
PWP announced the scholarships as investments in the city’s youth. It’s offering two new college scholarships exclusive to PUSD seniors planning to attend college. The students are required to devise creative new ways to promote water conservation and renewable energy.
“We meet so many bright young students each year during community events and field trips, and they’re always so willing to share their excitement and ideas,” PWP General Manager Phyllis E. Currie said. “This is our way of harnessing that creativity for the good of the community while preparing the next generation for higher education and the workforce.”
To accommodate the students’ schedules, the deadline to apply has been extended. Completed applications must now be submitted by midnight, April 21, 2014 by email only to [email protected]
This is the first time these scholarships will be awarded. PWP officials hope to make this an annual program.
First Place will earn $5,000 and Second Place will earn $1,000. Students must provide proof of acceptance for the 2014-15 school year to any accredited two-year or four-year college or university. Applicants must write a statement of 300 words to 500 words answering one of these questions:
1) Water scarcity is a major issue and topic of concern. How can Pasadena Water and Power do a better job of communicating the importance of water conservation to young adults?
2) Renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power are going to play an important role in our future. What type of energy source do you feel is best for our environment?
Applicants can utilize computers and Internet resources for free at the Pasadena Public Library if they do not have access at home or school.
