Weekly Review – 5/7/10

Another very sunny and warm week just passed right by here in Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley, and although the warm 80+ degree temperatures made news, so did many other things. Here’s a quick look at some of the top stories that made news right here in Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley this past week:

  • A fire ignited Tuesday afternoon at the Pasadena Water and Power facility on Glenarm St after a test of a new gas generator encountered a problem. After the Pasadena Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire, an investigation began to find the cause of the incident and get an accurate cost estimate of the damage. No injuries were reported in the incident and power was not interrupted in Pasadena at the time.
  • Preliminary results of the Pasadena Unified School District’s Measure CC election indicate that the measure did not gather enough votes in order to pass. In a statement earlier this week, PUSD superintendent Edwin Diaz issued the following statement after hearing of the results: “This is a difficult time for all of us because everyone involved in the campaign has worked so hard. Had Measure CC met the two-thirds approval threshold, we would have had an opportunity to keep our libraries open, preserve teachers’ jobs and sustain the momentum of improving academic achievement.” The measure, which sought to create a new parcel tax to help the PUSD’s multi-million dollar budget deficit, received just over a 52% passing vote in the election. It needed a two thirds majority in order to take effect.
  • Pasadena’s newest movie theater is now open! The new ArcLight Pasadena theater recently took the place of the previous Pacific Theaters in the Paseo Colorado shopping center on Colorado Blvd. In a renovation of the previous facility, the modernized complex features a new cafe along with new seats and many new dining and beverage choices.
