Authorities say the suspect called Glendale police around 8:40 pm for assistance in the 200 block of Barranca Street in West Covina. After the call was transferred to the West Covina Police Department, officers arrived at the site to speak to the suspect, described as a white male in his mid-40s. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Bill Cotter said the suspect may have possibly been mentally unstable and his reason for calling police is still unknown.

After police determined that no crime was committed, the officer let the man out of the police car when he jumped into the driver’s seat and drove off.

Authorities then began to pursue the stolen police car in the West Covina area with the vehicle approaching 100 mph going into the San Fernando Valley. Police say the chase ended around 10:30 p.m. when a police SUV rammed into the driver’s door and cornered the suspect in the 100 block of S. Glendale Avenue in Glendale.

Police say the suspect made efforts to remove weapons in the stolen police car and they shot down the suspect for their own safety. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
