A man has been charged for allegedly shooting and wounding a West Covina police officer last month, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.
Jose Chavez (dob 4/19/69) was charged in case KA112538 with one count each of attempted murder of a peace officer, assault on a peace officer with a semiautomatic firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon.
He is scheduled to be arraigned June 2, 2016, in Department 4 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, West Covina Branch.
Deputy District Attorney Jack Garden of the Crimes Against Peace Officers Section is prosecuting the case.
On May 20, Chavez was stopped by a West Covina police officer near the intersection of North Yaleton Avenue and Badillo Street. Chavez fled on foot and during the chase allegedly opened fire on the officer who suffered non-life threatening injuries. Chavez also was wounded by gunfire from the officer.
Chavez was later found and arrested on May 26.
If convicted as charged, Chavez faces up to life in state prison.
The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
