Pasadena Firefighters responded to control a gas leak this morning near the campus of the California Institute of Technology at Chester Street and Cordova Avenue after construction workers installing a water line nearby accidentally struck the 2″ gas line just before 8:30am this morning.
According to Pasadena Fire Department Officials, firefighters worked to contain the leak and prevent a fire or explosion while officials from The Gas Company responded to control and stop the leak by clamping the broken pipe. Officials from the Pasadena Police Department also worked to divert traffic during the course of the incident.
Several residents in nearby apartments were evacuated as a result of the pipe’s leak and others also sheltered-in-place. With the assistance of Cal-Tech Housing officials, the residents affected returned to their apartments shortly after the line was clamped and the apartment units were safe to enter.
