Pasadena Pushes A Spay/Neuter Ordinance Just For Pit Bulls

City officials say Pasadena is moving forward with an ordinance to require all pit bulls to be spayed or neutered. They say Councilman Steve Madison calls them dangerous animals and is actively seeking to reduce their presence in the city.

At a council meeting, Madison said, “Every month or two, you read about a pit bull killing a toddler or a senior, and I don’t want that to happen in Pasadena.  We want to stop it before it happens here.”

Staff reports say that at the council meeting, one person spoke in favor of the ordinance. They say since the meeting, pit bull advocates have voiced their concerns about the proposed law on the Internet and social media.

Last year, Madison pushed for an all-out ban on the dogs, but state law prohibits cities from banning specific breeds, say administrators. They say this new ordinance to have pit bulls spayed or neutered is similar to a Riverside County law that was just passed in October. In the meantime, there hasn’t been any pit bull fatalities in Pasadena.
